Up and Coming

For musicians, everything starts with a dream. That dream is to make their voices and their music heard. In Davao, two groups of musicians are starting to make this dream happen.

Fonzi and Friends

This band is a singer-songwriter acoustic band composed of three members: Fonzi Marquez (on vocals and acoustic guitar), Migz Orquina (on lead guitar) and JP Jickain (on beats/percussion). These three friends started jamming in 2010, forming a band with no name. It was only until recently that the band decided to call themselves “Fonzi and Friends”. Artists like Jason Mraz, John Mayer, Jack Johnson all influence the kind of sound the band makes, and most of their cover songs are by these singers. They describe their music as feel good tunes with positive energies. Singer/songwriter Fonzi Marquez takes inspiration from his daily life and translates this into songs that gives good vibes to its listeners. The band plays regularly every Saturday at Lorie’s Cafe in Araullo Ext., Davao City. Here is their first recorded track, Posible!

Listen on Posterous

If you watch TV, you’ve probably seen this band in Pilipinas Got Talent’s Season 2. Skeights has been around the Davao music scene for quite a while now, and they are not stopping anytime soon. This band of six takes influence from alternative, show gaze and electronica genres. They cover songs from various foreign bands, most notably The Script, Owl City and One Republic. They perform in Davao’s famous establishments like SM City Davao, MTS Taboan and are a constant fix at Mix FM’s Mix Sikat talent shows. They have also played in Tagum’s Musikahan Festival. After their appearance in PGT2’s audition episodes, Skeights’ following has grown and their fans are screaming for more cover songs from similar artist influences. Perhaps not known to many, they also have their original songs, one of which is shown below:

It is with no doubt that these bands will be heading to the top of the charts and into the hearts of many music lovers. And that dream? Well within their grasp.
